Westminster Abbey

Today we went to Westminster Abbey. When Tim and I were here in 2001 you were only allowed in the Abbey if you were part of a tour. At the time we had to get on a bus and be a part of the group to get into the Abbey... Since that time they have opened it up to walk in visitors so we were able to go.. Just as before there are really no words for Westminster Abbey.. I tried to get the girls to sit down and just absorb the surroundings. They were filled with questions - some of which they just cannot understand ... For example - How can someone be burried behind the walls or under the floors.. Emilie kept asking over and over again.. And how come Mommy cannot read Latin? Emilie's favorite part of the Abbey was knowing that Mary Queen of Scots was there and that she was able to see the Coronation Chair. Tonight at dinner she had me explaining to her what would happen when the next King is crowned. Emilie was full of questions about the past Queens - how they died and how many children they had.. I think she will really enjoy British History as she gets older.. it is so facinating! Obviously no photos allowed inside but as you can imagine if you have not been there - it is completely wonderful!

The Abbey has been the coronation church since 1066 and is the final resting place of seventeen monarchs.
The present church, begun by Henry III in 1245, is one of the most important Gothic buildings in the country

No he is not picking his nose - but close!
It was SOO cold today!

Looking up just before going into the Abbey

Half way through exploring the Abbey Emilie was hit by her constant need to eat! We found a place for her to have her ham and tomato sandwich!!

Few photos looking across from the Abbey
